Mobile Home Insurance

Mobile home insurance is not required by law — but if you’re thinking of purchasing a mobile home, it's important to know that mortgage firms and mobile home communities insist on having it insured.

In the same way that a normal homeowners insurance policy provides financial protection if your home is damaged, mobile home insurance, also known as manufactured home insurance, does just that.

Standard Coverage

Insurance for a mobile or manufactured home covers your home, personal items, and constructions on your land for the following:

  • Fire
  • Wind
  • Hail
  • Damage caused by water (excluding flood)
  • Theft
  • Hurricanes
  • Injuries to visitors

Mobile Home vs. Modular Home

A mobile or manufactured home is typically built on a metal frame and is delivered to the property in one piece. The foundation of a mobile home can be poured on a single slab of concrete to make a non-permanent foundation, and the trailer often resembles a box.

In contrast, modular homes are often delivered to a property in multiple pieces that need to be assembled on-site. Most of these homes have a basement or crawl space with a more traditional foundation. Furthermore, the appearance of the homes is more traditional than that of mobile homes.

Even though mobile and modular homes are both created in factories, they have very little in common. Both mobile home and modular home insurance policies cover two separate types of residences, so if you have one, you won't need the other. Finding the right type of mobile home insurance can be tricky if you don’t research on your own.

Know your own home from top to bottom. It would be best to look for a certification label, also known as a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) tag if you're still not sure what kind of house you have. The HUD tag is a small metal plate on the outside of a manufactured home.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re still curious about choosing to get mobile home insurance, read through these commonly asked queries about mobile home insurance in the U.S.

What is manufactured home insurance, and how does it work?

Homes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Although your factory-built mobile home is not the same as a site-built home, it deserves the same level of protection. Your manufactured homes policy will be custom-tailored to meet your specific needs and safeguard your house and all of your dreams depending on your provider.

Is it possible to classify a modular home as a mobile home?

It depends since modular homes are often built on site, unlike mobile homes, which are manufactured in a factory and transported to the site, modular homes are typically built similarly to ordinary residences. As a result, they are frequently insured by a normal homeowners policy.

What is the difference between a manufactured home and a mobile home?

None. Both mobile homes and manufactured homes are covered by the same mobile home insurance policy.

In the same way that a standard homeowners insurance policy protects you financially if your home is damaged, mobile home insurance, also known as manufactured home insurance, does the same with a few specific stipulations.
